Frequently Asked Questions

Is the webcam test really private?+
Yes. Everything runs locally in your browser using the standard getUserMedia API. We do not record, upload, or store your video. You can verify this by going offline after the page loads — the test continues to work.
Why does my browser ask for camera permission?+
Browsers require an explicit permission prompt before any website can access your camera. This is a built-in protection. Click Allow to start the test; you can revoke access anytime from your browser's site settings.
How do I switch between multiple cameras?+
If your computer has more than one camera, a dropdown appears in the sidebar. Pick a device and click Start to switch streams.
What if the test shows the wrong resolution?+
The tool requests 1920×1080 first and falls back to 720p or 480p if the camera doesn't support a higher resolution. The displayed resolution is what the camera actually delivered.
Can I take a photo with my webcam?+
Yes. Once the live preview is running, click Take Snapshot to capture the current frame and download it as a PNG. The image is generated client-side in a canvas — nothing is uploaded.
Why is the frame rate lower than expected?+
Frame rate depends on lighting, USB bandwidth, and CPU load. Many built-in laptop cameras drop from 30 FPS to 15 FPS in low light to expose properly. Better lighting usually restores the higher frame rate.
