Here is what separates a useful guide from a pretty one:

  1. Exam scope. It covers what the test covers, based on the syllabus and learning objectives.
  2. Condensed topics. Each section fits one idea. No copied paragraphs.
  3. Your own words. Rewriting forces you to process the idea.
  4. Questions, not only answers. Every key fact becomes a prompt you can quiz yourself on.
  5. A review plan. The guide gets used on set days, not once the night before.

1. Start from the exam, not your notes

Write the exam date, format, and topics at the top of a blank page. Pull the topic list from the syllabus, the learning objectives, or the review sheet your teacher gave you. The exam format tells you where to spend your time. That is the first rule of how to make a study guide for an exam: essays need arguments, multiple choice needs precise facts.

Start 7 to 10 days out. That gives you room for spaced reviews.

2. Gather every source in one place

Collect lecture slides, class notes, textbook chapters, homework, and past quizzes. Old quizzes show how your teacher phrases questions.

3. Sort by topic and flag weak spots

Group material under the topics from step 1. Then mark each topic green (solid), yellow (shaky), or red (lost). Build the red topics first while your energy is high.

4. Condense it in your own words

For each topic, write the core idea in two or three sentences. Add one example and one "why it matters" line. If you cannot explain it without looking, that topic goes back to red.

5. Turn facts into questions

This step is what most guides skip. Next to each fact, write a question that the fact answers. "Mitochondria produce ATP" becomes "What produces most of a cell's ATP?"

Now your guide is a self-quiz. Cover the answers and test yourself.

6. Brain-dump before you review

Before opening your guide, write everything you remember about a topic on a blank page. Then check it against the guide and add what you missed in a different color. The colored parts show you exactly where to focus.

7. Schedule spaced reviews

Put short sessions on your calendar: the day you finish, 2 days later, 5 days later, and the day before the exam. Each session is 20 to 30 minutes of quizzing, not rereading.

Draw arrows between branches and label each arrow with the relationship ("causes", "is part of", "opposes"). Those labels are what exams test.
